"Assessment is the single most powerful influence on learning in formal courses …" (Boud 2001. p67)
In such a rapidly changing world and workplace where information is so easily sourced the question arises:
"What skills are now important for young people to develop… what qualities do we want them to acquire, what attitudes and values do we want them to gain and what knowledge ‘abilities’ do they need to improve whilst engaged in formal learning environments?"
ReView online criteria-based asssessment is a catalyst to assist staff in making explicit the assessment criteria aimed at the development of these important 'attributes' over time and across different subjects or units in a course of study. It also enables students to 'self-assess' their own work against those criteria and monitor their own development of the important discipline-specific attribute categories.
